Spiritual abuse has been defined as the misuse of authority by a religious leader in order to coerce or manipulate community members for personal gain. In our own community there have been reports of such misconduct from imams, leaders of organizations, teachers and others. We are dedicated to empowering Muslim women leaders to be able to recognize and confront this abuse when it happens. Special attention will be paid to how spiritual abuse manifests in our lives, our institutions, and our cultures, including the pressures women will face to ignore it, and the way manipulation and intimidation are used behind the scenes to perpetuate this form of violence. Special guest Danish Qasim, from In Shaykh's Clothing, will be leading this training geared especially towards Muslim women leaders, teachers, parents and interested community members.
This workshop is part of our Gender Equity Initiative and is being implemented with the generous support of Islamic Relief USA. For more information, email our Gender Equity Advancement Coordinator, Michelle Bousba at Michelle@mwo-orlando.org.
